End of Year Updates

The 1st grade team has chosen denim or blue shorts/pants and a white top with a necktie for the Spring Dance month.

We will celebrate the ending of our year on the last day of school. Students may bring something to share with their classmates. There are 27 students in the class.

At-Home Activity

The 1st grade will be hosting the Citizen of the Month Assembly at the end of May. One child from the 1st grade classes will be chosen to read an essay they have written on the subject of sportsmanship. All students wishing to be considered for reading a speech to the student body at the end of the May need to submit an essay to their teacher by Friday, May 19th. A winning essay/student will be chosen by the 1st grade teachers. Parents of that child will be notified so they can make plans to be at the assembly. This is good public speaking experience and an excellent opportunity for video memories.

Ninety-First Day of School

In Writing we added closure to our procedural writing. At this point we have covered everything necessary to pass the standard on informational writing (CCSS.W.1.7)

We also completed work on our world maps. They will be taken home for studying purposes. For the test, students will NOT be required to outline the continents. They only need to be able to put the name of the continents where they belong on the map along with 4 oceans and the city of Los Angeles. (Have them sing the continent song while pointing the the continents on their map.)

Eighty-Eighth Day of School

Today we added time order words to our procedural writing. Tomorrow we will work on introductions.

In Social Science, we continued work on our world maps.

Eighty-Seventh Day of School

So far for our Informational Writing Unit we have made a prewriting list of things we would be able to teach someone else to do. Our next lesson was to plan the steps of a "How-to" writing by first talking through the steps and then planning them with diagrams. Today's lesson was to learn the imperative (command) form of verbs and to choose an appropriate verb to go with each step (diagram). The next step will be to write the sentence that goes with each verb. (When writing instructional steps we learn to begin our sentences with a verb.)

If you are following along with our writing lessons at home and do not understand a step and would like further explanation, either leave a comment below or come to the class after school.

Today we began working on our world map which we will take home in a few days to study for a map test in Social Science.

If you keep the foldable handy (sent home today in Math), there will be questions posted here at another time which reflect the type of CCSStandard questions which students are asked on assessments and which use the numbered cards.

Nineteenth Week of School

All Room 11 students taking the mid-year Reading Battery showed growth in reading ability. All students showed growth spelling as well.

Unsatisfactory notices will go home this week reflecting lower than standard scores on recent evaluations. As discussed before, it is not necessary for students to know the contents of the notices; it is for parent's information on the progress of their child. Please sign and return the lower portion of the  notice.

This week we will take the Chapter 4 Math Test.
